My Top 10 Essential Oils For Beginners

When you first get into aromatherapy choosing which oils you need or want can be a daunting task as there are around 90 single note essential oils to choose from with varying health benefits. Some of these oils are relatively cheap like Tea Tree and lavender but others can be rather more expensive like Neroli or Rose Absolute. It is tempting to buy them all, I personally would love to own every single one but you have to ask yourself if you would use them all or would some of these precious oils just go to waste, I prefer to build my collection by adding as I need them, But it is truly up to you how you go about it.

When I first began getting interested in aromatherapy in my mid teens and I picked oils by the fragrance alone and not for the uses they had (I don’t actually think I looked into their uses) or what was on sale and it quickly became clear that wasn’t the best way to go. I ended up with oils that went rancid before I had even used them as I hated the smell. I am now a lot older and wiser now knowing essential oils can have a healing effect mentally, physically, and emotionally I choose my oils by their health properties and also their blend-ability with other oils I already have, so to strengthen their healing properties.

With knowing how confusing it can be when starting out, I thought I’d put together a list of my top 10 most useful oils as a place to start. These oils are ones I have found particularly helpful and mix well together.

Please bear in mind this isn’t a list of the ‘cheapest oils’ there will be a variation in prices when you come to purchase them.

1 – Tea Tree – Melaleuca alternifolia

Tea Tree is a must have because it’s a fantastic low price oil with rich history of use as a local antiseptic for burns, cuts and grazes as well as a treat for a wide spectrum of bacterial and fungal infections such athletes foot and jock itch. Keep a bottle handy as it is great for spots and pimples. Tea tree fortifies the immune system and helps fight of infectious diseases. It is a strong anti-viral and anti-fungal and these properties are most useful in treating UTF’s, cystitis and thrush. It can lower fevers and should help tackle cold sores, influenza.

2) Lavender – Lavendula officinalis

Lavender oils is my favourite oil as it amazing for the body and mind. This soothing oil can clear headaches, lift moods and improves sleep. Lavender is said to help relieve menstrual pains and balance hormones as well as accelerating the healing time for burns, cuts, stings, and other wounds. This oil can be useful for the respiratory system by regulating and deepening breathing and calming a cough.

3) Lemon – Citrus limonum

lemon oils has a clean fresh smell and with its added antimicrobial it is now being praised for its ability to combat food-born pathogens, makes it fantastic kitchen cleaner (disinfectant). This oils can improve concentration and clear thinking so it is great in a diffuser for study. This oil can remove dead skin cells and improves pale and dull completion and is great for cleansing oily hair and skin. Lemon oil is said to ease the sting of colds sores, soothes insect bites and general stings and my favourite, it helps combat brittle nails.

4) Eucalyptus – Eucalyptus globulus

Eucalyptus is excellent for respiratory track infections, influenza, throat infections, coughs, catarrh, sinusitis and asthma. It can help relieve a blocked nose from colds or hay fever (this oil is always in my diffuser when I have a cold) but it can also reduce the painful effects of a migraine and is general good with muscular aches and pains. This oil is also useful at stopping the bacterial growth on burns that causes the delay in new skin growth and seems to improve inflamed cuts, wounds and ulcers.

5) Rosemary – Rosmarinus officinalis

Rosemary is another oil that is fantastic for the mind and body. It can clear the head and helps with memory by energising the brain but also can clear headaches and migraines. Rosemary is said to be able to relieve pain and revive tired muscles. Rosemary is another oils which is great for the lungs and helps with colds, asthma, bronchitis and influenza. One amazing healing effect of rosemary that many people are unaware of is its ability to normalise blood pressure.

6) Roman Chamomile – Matricaria chamomilla

Chamomile is a great oil for women it can help activate and regulate menstruation whilst easing period pains and eases the symptoms of pre menstrual tension and menopause. This oil is calming, it aids relaxation and a sounder nights sleep. It soothes anxiety, tension fear and anger so is fantastic for those who suffer from anxiety or panic attacks. With its analgesic properties it may ease muscular pains caused by nervous tension, alleviate headaches, toothache and earache. Chamomile soothes minor burns, inflamed wounds and is helpful in such skin disorders as psoriasis, dermatitis and acne. It is kind to sensitive skin and improves skins elasticity.

7) Clove – Eugenia caryophyllata

Clove oil is commonly used as an antiseptic for oral infections. Due to its antiseptic properties, clove oil is useful for wound, cuts, scabies, athlete’s foot, fungal infections, bruises, prickly heat, and other types of injuries. It can also be used for treating insect bites and stings Clove oil is often recommended for skin care, especially for acne patients. Clove oil is fantastic for it’s lessening effects on aging, like wrinkles, sagging skin, and facial rejuvenation due to it’s rejuvenating and stimulating properties, which can increase blood flow to the unhealthy skin and make it look youthful. It can elevate headaches, boost the immune system and lower stress. It’s cooling and anti-inflammatory effect are frequently used to clear the nasal passage. This expectorant is a useful treatment for various respiratory disorders including cold, cough, bronchitis, asthma, sinusitis, and tuberculosis. Chewing a clove bud is recommended to soothe sore throats.

8) Peppermint – Mentha piperita

Peppermint can aid concentration and memory, stimulating the brain to think clearly. Peppermint is excellent for all digestive disorders such as flatulence, diarrhoea, bloating and nausea. This oil is cooling when hot yet warming when cold. It is ideal for colds and influenza especially sinus congestion, dry coughs and sore throats. It is stimulating for dizziness and fainting. This oil can ease headaches and migraines and is great for toothache. It is excellent for helping aching feet and muscular pains. It helps remove congestion so could be a help for dermatitis, ringworm snd scabies. Peppermint relieves itching, inflammation and sunburn. Peppermint is great for oily skin and hair and removes blackheads.

9) Oregano – Origanum vulgare

Oregano oil’s disinfectant and antibacterial properties are useful for treating bacterial infections on the skin or wounds. It can be used to protect food from bacteria. Oregano  oil can act as an expectorant, which loosens up or helps eliminate the uncomfortable buildups of mucus and phlegm in the respiratory tracts and sinuses. It is also a soothing balm for inflamed lungs and throat, which may often stimulate coughing fits. This oil is great for soothing many types of inflammation, both internal and external,. When it is applied topically, it can reduce redness and irritation. It can also relieve pain associated with arthritis or injury. This oil is beneficial for regulating menstruation and delaying the onset of menopause. It can treat many types of parasites, such as roundworms, tapeworms, lice, bed bugs, mosquitoes, and fleas live inside or outside the human body. Oregano oil provides protection against viral infections. It strengthens your immunity against cold, mumps, measles, pox, and other problems caused by viruses. This boost to the immune system helps to defend against deadly viral infections and even autoimmune disorders.

10) Geranium – Pelargonium graveolens

Geranium is a great oil it influences the adrenal cortex, it reduces stress and is uplifting oil quelling anxiety and depression. Geranium can regulate the hormonal system, which is useful for pre menstrual tension and menopausal issues. It has a clearing/toning effect on the liver and kidneys, helping them to eliminate toxins from the body. Due to its diuretic properties it is helpful with in reducing fluid retention and swollen ankles. Geranium is said to be effective in throat infections and clears mucous. Effective for all skin conditions, balancing sebum, it is may also be effective for eczema, burns, shingles, ringworm. It cleanses the skin and brightens up dull complexions and pale skin. Geranium is a great aromatic insect repellant. ‘Folklore says for centuries that these pretty plants were planted around homes to ward of evil spirits’
